What's in My Bag- Dog Edition? 5 Essential Products I Always Reach For!
As a Certified Dog Trainer, I get asked a lot about the products I use for my own dogs—and the ones I often recommend to my clients. Here are 5 of my go-to items that make training and daily life with dogs much easier and more enjoyable.
-
Clickers
I swear by these clickers because of their loud, clear sound, and their convenient wristband. It makes training sessions so much easier when you're on the go or don’t want to hold the clicker in your hand all the time. Clickers are small, so having the wristband is a game changer. I recommend getting a multi-pack, as they’re handy to have around the house or in places where you train often (like one in the training room, one in your jacket or bag, and some extra as backups!). Here’s the clicker I use! -
Flirt Pole
A flirt pole is like a giant cat toy—but for dogs! I’ve had my flirt pole for over two years, and it’s a fantastic way to burn off energy and engage your dog in fun play. It can also be used a reinforcer. Check out the flirt pole I recommend! -
Kong Toys
I can’t get enough of Kongs! These toys are perfect for keeping dogs busy & engaged. They can also encourage your dogs to relax. Stuff with treats when needed or prep a stuffed kong in advance (& store in fridge/freezer) so you can grab when you want your dog to go do a passive, quiet activity. I suggest getting a 2-pack —having one prepped and ready to go makes it super easy for quick enjoyment. Here’s the 2-pack I use! I also love the bone-shaped Kong for added variety. A Long Line
A long line is a must for giving your dog some freedom to roam while still maintaining control. I recommend getting a line that’s at least 25 feet long so your dog can explore a bit without being off-leash. This is especially useful in open fields where you want to practice recall but still have safety in mind. I recommend a lightweight line for puppies - here is 1 option. For adult dogs, look for a biothane leash from a local leash maker, as they’re easy to clean, durable, and don’t wear down when they get wet or dirty—unlike nylon leashes. While nylon leashes are still great for small dogs and puppies, biothane is my go-to for adult dogs. -
Long-Lasting Chews
Long-lasting chews are lifesavers on busy days when you need your dog to stay occupied. My dogs favourite chews are yak chews, collagen sticks or braids, and beef cheeks. These options are similar to bully sticks but are more affordable and just as satisfying for your dog.
